Mrs. Pearson,
our Librarian
Penny Drive
English Crossing Elementary School has an annual Penny Drive. The Penny
Dive is a fundraiser for the library. Each year, we have a small competition
between classes to see how many pennies, nickels, quarters and dimes
we can bring in to buy library books. The winning class in each grade
level wins a recess and ice cream with Mrs. Pearson, the librarian.
Each and every penny goes to purchase library books, which are stamped
with a "Penny Drive" stamp so the kids know they helped purchase
that book. As you may know, many people love to contribute money in
all forms to the library during penny drive. As Mrs. Pearson says, "You
don't need to go to the bank and make your donation into pennies, just
send your donation."

In
2005, our school community donated
$1600.00 for new library books!
Reading At Home
Our Reading At Home program runs all school year. It is designed to
encourage children to practice reading daily. Research has shown that
when children re
ad
and are read to daily, their reading scores improve and their reading
ability soars. Taking the time to read for a few minutes each day is
a part of the homework for all English Crossing students, and the participation
in this homework is measured by the Reading At Home program, run by
the library. Each month the children mark their RAH calendars for the
days they spend at least 15 minutes reading alone or with someone. At
the end of each month, the students make sure their parents sign their
calendars, then turn them in on our RAH recognition day. The RAH team,
run by the librarian, Mrs. Pearson, stamps their calendars with the
date, gives each child a small prize to recognize their effort, and
tracks their reading on a class list and a chart in the library. Students
who participate in RAH for at least 7 months out of 8 will be invited
to to on a special celebration field trip, sponsored by the Lakewood
PTA.
Annual Events
in the library:
Sasquatch
Reading Award is an award program where children vote each year
to choose a favorite book from a list of nominees published in the last
two to three years. Children begin reading the books in September. Voting
takes place in the library in March. Only children are allowed to vote!
Our votes go on to the state level. This award is given by the Washington
Library Media Association. For
a list of the current nominees and past winners go to: http://www.wlma.org/Association/sasquatch.htm
Sasquatch
Challenge: Mrs. Pearson has challenged all students to read all
of the 12 Sasquatch nominees this year. Those students who read all
12 books and pass a test on each book will be invited to a pizza party
in June!
