CLASSROOM RULES & EXPECTATIONS

•  Respect yourself & others – listen to student responses, no name-calling or put-downs.

•  School materials only in class no eating in the classroom, cells phones off, no iPods, CD, or MP3 players, etc.

•  Do your personal best each day – if you do your best each day, you will be successful.

•  Follow instructions the first time they are given – pay attention in class.

•  The bell does not dismiss you, I do – stay in your seats until I excuse you.

ATTENDANCE

Student attendance is related to the goals of the science course that I teach and therefore it is critical that students are present in order to be successful. Tardies or absences will affect your grade or credit in this course, therefore you need to be in class on time & make up missed assignments. The school-wide attendance policy will be enforced in this science course. Discipline for tardies will be as follows: 1st & 2nd tardy = teacher warning, 3rd tardy = 30 min. detention, 4th tardy = Wednesday School & parent contact, 5th tardy = Wednesday School , 6th tardy = Wednesday School & Parent conference, & 7th tardy or more = Progressive discipline/ Out-of-school suspension.

MAKE-UP & EXTRA CREDIT WORK

Late work is not accepted!! Make-up is only accepted in cases of excused absences. It is your responsibility to check on the schools web page for missed assignments, tests, etc. or on the weekly calendar in the classroom immediately upon your return from an absence. The number of days allowed for turning in make-up work is limited to the number of days of excused absence. Missed tests, quizzes, & labs will be made up according to arrangements made with me (make-ups for these will be done during tutorial or before or after school). All missing assignments must be made-up prior to module tests.

There will only be limited opportunities for extra credit work, & these opportunities will be offered to the entire class. There will be no extra credit opportunities for individual students who failed to complete the required coursework for whatever reasons.

GRADING POLICY & ASSIGNMENTS

Your semester grade in this course is based upon the total points that you earn during the semester. First & third quarter grades are based on the points earned only during those quarters. Points are earned by: 1) maintaining a science journal (containing the following: lecture &/or discussion notes, lab flow charts, in-class & homework assignments, etc.), 2) taking tests & quizzes, & 3) completing laboratory & activity assignments. Homework is an intricate part of this course curriculum and must be taken seriously in order for students to be prepared for class and to be successful in this course.

The points for each semester will come from:

•  Tests, quizzes, film/video notes, & journal evaluations (which will include, but not be limited to, lab flow charts, concept maps, in class & homework assignments, etc.) = 55% of semester grade

•  Labs = 20% of semester grade

•  A comprehensive final exam = 25% of semester grade

You will NOT be allowed to use your journals on quizzes or tests.

You may check your grade at anytime during this course by checking Family Access through WESPAC. Your password will be given to you at the beginning of the year, make sure that you keep your password in a secure location. Your grade will be based upon the following scale:

94-100% A 77-79 C+
90-93 A- 73-76 C
87-89 B+ 70-72 C-
83-86 B 66-69 D+
80-82 B- 60-65 D
0-59 F
