Our principal, Dr. Woods, is taking
a short break from being our fearless leader!!
School Programs
It is our belief that
all students can be successful. Our staff strives very hard to
meet the various learning needs of each student within the regular
instructional program. We provide special programs such as ECEAP
preschool, Developmentally Delayed Preschool, Special Education,
and Learning Lab.
Lakewood School District
has set a strategic goal that students will be reading on or above
grade level at the end of third grade. Good reading and homework
habits begin in kindergarten and strengthen in first and second
grades.
Our Reading At Home
program is a very important part of our plan for reading success.
Research has shown that children who read daily and who are read
to regularly learn to read sooner and better than children who
are not given that advantage. A school full of children whose
parents model a love of reading and share books with them is a
worthwhile goal that can be accomplished with your help.
Reading At Home is
a program to encourage and recognize reading at home. Children
are given a monthly calendar and asked to mark every day that
they read or are read to. The goal is to read 15-20 minutes per
day, at least 5 days a week. At the end of the month, the children
have their calendars checked and are recognized for their accomplishment
with small prizes.
Math At Home is a program
that encourages children to try out some real world math activities.
The Math At Home sheet is on the back of the monthly Reading at
Home calendar. Both are a required part of the children's homework,
and participation in Reading A Home and Math At Home will be noted
on the report card. Detailed information about Reading and Math
At Home will be sent home in September.
Lakewood Elementary
also offers a team teaching approach in the first and second grade
setting. In the team teaching model, two teachers teach to the
same class. This enables students to work with two teachers to
meet their academic needs in each subject, and learning styles
can be met by both teaching styles.
Co-Curricular Programs
Other school enrichment
programs are offered to students during the year by staff, parents,
the YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other local agencies. Flyers
will be sent home with students or through the mail regarding
these activities.
Some of these activities
include: Choir, ASB, Spring Musical, Banking
Program, Lakewood Jr. Sports, Campfire and Scouts, and Student
Store.
Learning Improvement
Team (LIT)
Staff, parents and
community representatives meet regularly during the school year
and actively participate in school program development and evaluation.
This group values "ongoing" improvements and continually
strives to enable LES to be an outstanding school for our students.
L.I.T. assesses needs, helps to make important decisions, and
assists in developing quality school programs.
