The Lakewood
Elementary Library

Greetings From the Librarian!!

Welcome to another great school year! Please stop by to tour the library and introduce yourself when you get the opportunity. I am your children's librarian, Mrs. Ziemer, but students call me Mrs. Z. My passion is children's literature and one of the perks to being the librarian is I get to share that love with all the children at L.E.S. I firmly believe reading paves the way to success in all academic areas for students and welcome the opportunity to team with staff and community members in making reading a priority for all. I look forward to meeting you!!

Lakewood Elementary School has an annual Penny Drive. Penny Drive is a fundraiser for the library. Each year, we have a small competition between classes to see how many pennies, nickels, quarters and dimes we can bring in to buy library books.

The winning class in each grade level wins a recess and ice cream with the librarian. Each and every penny goes to purchase library books, which are stamped with a "Penny Drive" stamp so the kids know they helped purchase that book. Many people love to contribute money in all forms to the library during penny drive.

Penny Drive Donations this year totaled $1309.85!!

Thank you for your generous support of our library!!!!

Our Reading At Home program runs all school year. It is designed to encourage children to practice reading daily. Research has shown that when children read and are read to daily, their reading scores improve and their reading ability soars.

Taking the time to read for a few minutes each day is a part of the homework for all Lakewood Elementary students, and the participation in this homework is measured by the Reading At Home program, run by the library. Each month the children mark their RAH calendars for the days they spend at least 15 minutes reading alone or with someone. At the end of each month, the students make sure their parents sign their calendars, then turn them in on our RAH recognition day.

The RAH team, run by the librarian, gives each child a small prize to recognize their effort, and tracks their reading on a class list and a chart in the hallway leading to the Library. Students who participate in RAH for at least 8 months out of 9 will be invited to a special celebration, sponsored by the Lakewood PTA.

March 2, 2007 is Dr. Seuss' 103rd birthday and Read Across America Day. To celebrate, throughout the week of Feb. 26th - March 2nd we will be hosting a Dr. Seuss Read-In for every class during their library time. Everyone is encouraged to bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket to school on their library day (must fit in a backpack). The students will enjoy reading Dr.Seuss books, playing Dr. Seuss games, and munching a bunch of nummy treats!!

  • Bookfairs are held in November and April.
  • Penny Drive is held in January and February.
  • Reading At Home is a year long program.
  • The Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award is an award program where children vote each year to choose a favorite book from a list of nominees published in the last two to three years. Teachers participate in reading the 20 picture books to the children in January and February. Voting takes place in the library in March. Only children are allowed to vote! Our votes go on to the state level. This award is given by the Washington Library Media Association.
