| First graders are busy mastering the names of the letters, the
sounds that letters make, blending sounds together to read words and
sentences, rhyming words, and basic sight words. These are the fundamental skills needed to
build a strong foundation for reading. Students are also learning some
basic decoding rules such as the silent e rule and the when two vowels go
walking, the first does the talking rule. Students also learn some common
blends such as th and sh.
First graders are also working hard at printing neatly, labeling pictures they draw, combining words to write sentences, and sentence combining. Students also are mastering which letters match the sound it makes. They use this skill a lot when trying to spell. Kids will be learning how to follow the writing process. In math, first graders are counting and writing numbers and counting and writing numbers from various starting points. They are learning how to use and manipulate the number line. First graders use stories about a bug on a number line to write number sentences and determine which sign to use based on if the bug plusses or minuses and which direction the bug goes. The number line provides a concrete source that helps students develop number sense. First graders are also learning about place value, addition, subtraction, and other math concepts. |
