READING

Second graders are working hard to increase their reading fluency, sight word knowledge, and reading comprehension.

Reading fluency means not only reading fast, but reading with expression and voice. Students have to build up some reading speed before expression and comprehension can take place. Sight word knowledge is the number of words the reader can read by sight without having to slow down to decode it. The more words that can be recognized by sight the faster the student will be able to read. Reading comprehension is understanding what has been read. If a student can read fluently and has a solid base of sight words, then comprehension usually takes place. Comprehension is taught by lots of practice reading, thinking about what is being read, and asking lots of questions.

WRITING

Second graders are working toward organizing their thoughts to get them down on paper in a coherent manner. One way to help kids organize their ideas is to provide them with a structure to follow. We use the writing process model. The steps to the process are as follows:
1. Students pick an idea to write about.
2. Next, they make a web to connect and organize ideas.
3. Then they make a first, or sloppy copy.
4. The next step is to edit and revise (with teacher's help).
5.  Finally, the students write their final draft. Students often are allowed to choose their own topics to write about. This makes writing have more meaning to the kids.

Math

Second graders continue to work on place value with hundreds, tens, and ones; measurement; adding and subtracting single and double digit facts with and without renaming; money; time; story problems; counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. During the remaining months of the school year students will continue to work on the skills already learned plus move on to adding triple digit numbers.
