Learn about the levies on your April 23 ballot. The Replacement Levy for Educational Programs and Operations levy will replace an expiring levy that makes up about 14% of the district's budget. There is no tax-rate increase with the EP&O levy. The Capital Improvements and Safety Levy is a new levy. It focuses on the maintenance and preservation of district facilities and safety/security improvements across the district and seeks to address the short-term needs identified by the Citizens’ Facilities Advisory Committee. As part of Lakewood School District’s commitment to financial responsibility, the district successfully completed a $30,480,000 public sale of their Unlimited Tax General Obligation Refunding Bonds, 2024A. The sale was finalized on March 5, 2024. The purpose of this sale was to refinance the District’s outstanding 2014 Bonds. This refinancing will reduce the District’s existing debt obligation by more than $4.6 million over the next nine years.
Running a store takes coordination, teamwork and problem-solving. The student store at Lakewood High School serves smoothies and other beverages and baked goods during lunches. Marketing students run the store as part of DECA. DECA is a Career and Technical Education club that prepares students for careers in business, marketing and entrepreneurship.
Who creates those websites you use on a daily basis? Students in the web design class at Lakewood High School are learning HTML and CSS in Scott Koon’s computer science classroom. By the end of the year, they will build an entire website and will have marketable skills for after they graduate. Career and Technical Education classes prepare students to work in a wide range of industries and occupations. Students also receive experience for life, such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Lakewood High School students made it a special Valentine’s Day for a group of seniors at Warm Beach Senior Community. Members of the FCCLA club (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) created valentines and decorated cookies with residents during a Valentine’s Day tea. Serving community is the foundation of FCCLA, a Career and Technical Student Organization that functions as an integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences education curriculum.
With the sunshine we have experienced the past couple of days it is a sure sign that spring is right around the corner.
