Board of Directors Redistricting
-
Every 10 years, following the U.S. Census, Lakewood School District is required to redraw the boundaries of its Board of Directors' districts to reflect population shifts. Please note: Redistricting of school board director boundaries does NOT affect student school attendance boundaries.

What is redistricting?
Redistricting is the process of changing boundaries of voting districts so that all districts have the same number of people. This is how we make sure that everyone has equal representation in government. -
Why redistrict?
As states and communities grow and change, peoples’ representation in government begins to get out of balance. Redistricting brings everything back into balance to make sure that every member of the community is represented fairly. -
Criteria for Changes
State law requires that the plan for redrawn Board Director boundaries be consistent with the following criteria:
- Each internal director, council, or commissioner district shall be as nearly equal in population.
- Each district shall be as compact as possible.
- Each district shall consist of geographically contiguous area.
- Population data may not be used for purposes of favoring or disfavoring any racial group or political party.
- To the extent feasible, the district boundaries shall coincide with existing recognized natural boundaries.
- To the extent possible, the district boundaries shall preserve existing communities of related and mutual interest.
