After a rigorous selection process, the Lakewood School Board has named Dr. Erin Murphy as its new superintendent. Murphy is currently the Deputy Superintendent for Bainbridge Island School District. The Board approved Murphy’s appointment in a unanimous vote on Friday, April 28, 2023. She is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2023.
Murphy was selected from a large pool of well-qualified applicants. Three finalists visited the district this week, touring schools, meeting with staff, students, and community members, and leading a public forum.
Lakewood School Board President Sandy Gotts said the work in selecting a new superintendent was a collaboration between community, staff, students and the School Board. “The Lakewood Community came up strong in their support during the selection process and their involvement was vital to the process. We had some very strong candidates and it was a thoughtful, intense decision by the Lakewood School Board, but we knew we had the right fit with Dr. Erin Murphy,” she said.
Murphy will oversee the daily operations of the Lakewood School District, including management of its approximately $40 million budget, more than 300 employees, five schools, and numerous programs and partnerships.
Gotts said, “Dr. Murphy’s overall experience, connection to community, and approach to teaching and learning is exactly what Lakewood needs in a superintendent.”
Murphy will take over the superintendent position from Superintendent Scott Peacock who announced that he is stepping down at the end of this school year.
“Students are at the heart of all work in the Lakewood School District,” Murphy said. “I look forward to joining this amazing community and am honored and excited to serve as your next superintendent.”
