Community service is a great way to gain work or career experience and exposure that you wouldn’t normally get. Colleges and scholarship committees are looking for people who are involved with and care about their own community. Plus, volunteering can make you feel better! Helping people, animals, your community or the environment can build your self-esteem and connect you with the world around you.
Look for an organization that offers opportunities that interest you or can utilize your skills. Once you have found the opportunities that look interesting to you, make a list of questions to ask to help you get a better understanding of what it is like to work there. Be prepared to propose ways you can and are willing to help. Treat your opportunity just as you would a job. Be on time. Dress appropriately. Be dependable and honest.
