March 2, 2023 update
On February 28, the Curriculum Instructional Materials Committee met and considered recommended CSHE instructional materials.
The LWSD Comprehensive Sexual Health Education Instructional Materials Committee narrowed its selection of curriculum materials to three choices for each grade band based on scoring rubrics and group discussion. The committee ranked the curriculum as follows:
- HealthSmart (6-12)
- Flash (6-12)
- Great Body Shop (6-8)/HealthSmart (9-12)
The CIMC agreed unanimously to move the materials to the School Board for approval consideration. A recording of the meeting is available. The passcode is 7SPm.E4U.
On March 1, the Lakewood Board of Directors received a presentation on the recommended CHSE materials, viewed community feedback and provided time for public comment. The Lakewood School Board will take action on the recommendation at the board meeting on March 15. Time for public comment will be provided.
Community Feedback: Lakewood community members may continue to preview the recommended materials and provide feedback electronically though March 9, 2023 at noon. October 19, 2022 update
The board has appreciated the community’s input and is re-evaluating the adoption process in light of the varied interests in our community. During the October 18 study session, the board reviewed the adoption committee’s charge and discussed new instructions to the CSHE adoption committee that are intended to allow for consideration of new materials that are responsive to community interests.
New instructions to the adoption committee will be presented to and considered by the board at its regular business meeting on November 2. New instructions, if approved by the board, would direct the adoption committee to reopen the adoption of materials for grades 6-12 under new parameters. CHSE Meeting #1 (amended charge) Agenda and Notes
November 29, 2022-9:45 AM -12 PM
Present: Peter, Edyen, Crystal, Paula, Dana, Heidi, Maggie, Bill, Amanda, Kayla, Ethan, Joey, Bryan Toutant
Agenda:
- Review Amended Board Charge from 11/2/22
- Review CHSE Forum Feedback from 9/14/22
- Review CSHE letters from the community presented to the board on 10/6/22
- Process reviewed information in small groups/whole group:
- What do you hear in the reviewed documents?
We hear that people were concerned about specific content issues and age appropriateness of the materials. CSHE is an important topic for those that attended the forum or sent email. There were questions about the Get Real curriculum going beyond the required standard. Several comments about gender identity were noted. There was also concern about Planned Parenthood being the author of Get Real. Parents want to understand the opt-out procedure.
-
- Are there voices that are missing? If so, who?
There were a few people at the community forum who appreciated the curriculum. The team reiterated its desire is to support with our community and choose the best curriculum for students. We look forward to finding a curriculum that builds bridges rather than breaks them. The voice that seems absent from the community conversation is the student’s voice.
-
- How does this inform your thinking about the board charge? “Instructional materials should clearly align with state standards and age-appropriate instruction as informed by community input.”
When looking at the curriculums we will need be clear to the community which lessons will be explicitly taught and which do not align with the standards and therefore will not be used in the classroom. Parents see the curriculum as the entirety of the learning. It is important to recognize this as we move forward.
- Each member will explore OSPI provided CSHE Instructional Materials Reviews for all curricula that is has previously been reviewed by OSPI, is a full curriculum, and may or may not require modification to meet state law.
- Collected information will be recorded in the standards correlation document and notes document.
Explained the documents in the folder. Will send the documents with the links to the curriculums. Please review curriculums for how they meet the CSHE standards and use the other page to document any notes or wonderings.
- Collected information will be recorded in the standards correlation document and notes document.
