Safety Upgrade at LMS: New Fire Control System

Lakewood Middle School recently received a major safety upgrade with the installation of new fire alarm control panels.

The previous fire control system had reached the end of its service life and no longer met current safety standards. The new system includes advanced smoke and heat detection, integrated alarm and communication systems, and centralized monitoring—ensuring faster, more reliable emergency response.

New energy-saving LED lights at LHS stadium

If you were at the district track meet in May, you may have noticed something new at Lakewood High School’s Dick Cardinal Stadium — energy-saving LED lights.

Thanks to funding support from Snohomish PUD and the Washington State Department of Commerce, we’ve upgraded our lighting system to cut energy use and save money — all while meeting goals set by Washington’s Clean Buildings Act.

Time's up, old bell

We were hoping the bell/master clock/intercom system at Lakewood Middle School would hang in there a little longer... but it had other plans! This fall, it officially clocked out for good.

The new bell system is up and running, and the digital classroom clocks have arrived. Over the next few weeks, they’ll be installed in every classroom, ensuring classes stay right on time.

Lakewood awarded $538,885 to increase energy efficiency

As part of its commitment to improve energy efficiencies and reduce utility costs, Lakewood School District is pleased to announce it has been awarded a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce and an energy incentive from Snohomish PUD. The total energy-efficiency funding of $538,885 will be used to install energy-efficient LED lighting at Lakewood Middle School and Lakewood High School’s Dick Cardinal Stadium.

The grant award of $293,663 from the Department of Commerce is one of 26 grants in Washington state and one of four in Snohomish County. Snohomish PUD incentivized Lakewood’s grant with a contribution of $245,222. Funded by the Climate Commitment Act, the Commerce grants are expected to play a key role in helping buildings meet Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standards.

LMS STEM Lab - Opened in Spring 2021

students programming robots

3D printers, laser cutters and student-programmed robots were on display during the Lakewood Middle School STEM Lab Open House on March 31, 2022. Visitors had a chance to try to pick up blocks with robots and see the lab equipment in action.

Lakewood Middle School students started using the two new classrooms and lab during spring 2021. Funding for this project was made possible by the state School Construction Assistance Program. The district became eligible for $12 million of construction assistance from the state after completing the Lakewood High School bond project, which was approved by voters in 2014. Thank you, voters, for making this learning experience possible for our students!

Support Services Addition - Completed Spring 2022

Addition exterior under construction

Construction on a 2,100-square-foot addition at the Support Services Center began in May 2021 and was completed in late spring 2022.

To make space for the new STEM Lab at Lakewood Middle School, the district relocated some support staff to the Support Services Center, where buses and the Transportation Department are located.

The project was funded by state School Construction Assistance Program funds. The district became eligible for $12 million of construction assistance from the state after completing the Lakewood High School construction bond project.

As well as spaces for employees, the addition includes a shop so maintenance can do projects, such as welding, on site.

Lakewood High School - Opened in Fall 2017

Today, more than 800 students, 9th-12th grade, attend Lakewood High School. The current high school building opened in 2017 after the Lakewood community voted to approve a bond measure in 2014. The school opened with features such as safety improvements, science laboratory classrooms, a metal shop/construction classroom, a culinary classroom, a performing arts space, and an auxiliary gymnasium that allows more than one sports team to practice at the same time.

Thank you, voters, for making this school possible. Superintendent Scott Peacock said, “Lakewood High School is a testament to what the Lakewood community can accomplish when we work and dream together.”
