Substitute Classified Employees
Substitute classified positions do not require a teaching certificate.
Substitute Classified positions include:
- Bus Drivers
- Custodian
- Food Service
- Paraeducators
- Student Supervision
- Nurse
General requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- For bus/van drivers and mechanics: At least five years of experience driving a personal vehicle.
- For paraeducators: AA degree or higher in related field, two years of higher education, or demonstration of successful passage of ETS ParaPro Assessment.
- For kitchen assistants: Washington State Food Worker Card (available from the state for $10.)
- Pass a background check ($50.00 paid to OSPI) prior to first day of employment.
How many hours will I work?
Some positions only require 2.5 hours per day (kitchen assistant). Paraeducator positions are generally 6.25 hours per day.
What kind of training is provided?
Bus drivers receive training to obtain a CDL permit and additional driver training. Bus drivers can receive up to $2,000 in incentives.
What will I get paid?
Starting pay for the following substitute classified positions are as follows (please see job listing for most up-to-date pay range):
- Substitute Drivers: $29.47/hr (bus); $24.92/hr (van)
- Substitute Custodian: $27.30/hr
- Substitute Paraeducators: $23.66/hr
- Substitute Student Supervision: $22.40/hr
- Substitute Kitchen Assistants: $21.13/hr

What does a paraeducator do?
Paraeducators work alongside teachers to assist students throughout their classroom and school.
- Help with make-up work, classroom assignments and tests
- Assist students one-on-one or in small groups with lessons
- Read stories, listen to students read, provide writing assistance, reinforce lessons, help with computer learning programs and more
- Help students reach academic goals and grade-level standards
- Communicate with teachers
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma (or equivalent) and
- AA degree or
- 72 college credits or
- Successful completion of the ParaPro assessment
- Successful completion of training requirements as outlined by the Paraeducator Certificate Program
