    Dear Lakewood Middle School Families,

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at LMS. I trust everyone has had a wonderful summer break with lots of rest and opportunities to enjoy numerous activities with friends and family. The staff and I are looking forward to an exciting, productive and successful school year.

Last year, your students continued to show performance gains as measured by the end of the year Smarter Based Assessments (SBA) and Measurement of Student Performance (MSP). Our staff set high expectations and developed a clear plan for teaching and learning, and students responded again.  You will receive your individual student scores later this month. We continue look for additional performance gains this year and will resume our focus on improving your student’s academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

I would like you to be aware of a number of program changes this year at LMS.  First, our 7th and 8th graders will have expanded opportunities to earn high school credit while here at the middle school.  This is important because state graduation requirements have increased to 24 credits.  Second, we are offering many new classes for students.  These include Pathways to Success, World Cultures, Engineering, Robotics, Health, and Office Tech.  Third, we are introducing a semester length intervention class for Reading and Math which is available to students that are close to standard in those areas but need a bit more support.  Finally, we have changed the Literacy class from two periods to one to accommodate all of the above additions.

To our students, I ask that you reflect on your goals and strive to do your best every day. Know that administration and staff are here to support and encourage you as you explore different opportunities and grow as learners.  You will be expected to give 100% academically and behaviorally.

To our parents, I ask that you continue to expect the best education for your children.  Let us know what we can do to help your student achieve and meet with academic success.  Parent involvement is vital to your children’s success, and we ask that you continue to play an active role in their education.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or input at any time.

    Best regards,

    Bryan Toutant
