Board votes to put renewal levy for technology, facilities on April ballot
On Wednesday, Dec. 15, the Lakewood School District Board of Directors voted to put a Renewal Levy for Technology and Facilities Improvements on the April 2022 ballot.
Thanks to voter support in 2020, all of Lakewood’s 2,500 students had a Chromebook computer to use during online learning. When the 2020 levy expires at the end of 2022, this levy will replace it to keep devices updated, supported and properly maintained.
The proposed renewal levy funds technology and facility needs not funded by the state. It authorizes the district to collect a total of $3.8 million over four years, 2023-2026. The proposed rate for this levy renewal is $0.22 per $1,000 of assessed property value (AV).
The proposed 2022 levy restores funding for critical building and maintenance projects that was lost when the district ran a technology-only levy in 2020, in recognition of community hardship during the pandemic. It would fund needed building improvements including upgraded fire safety controls, roofs at two schools, a boiler replacement and safety fencing.
