Lakewood High School receives high honors at DeMiero Jazz Festival

Lakewood High School received a long list of honors during the 48th annual DeMiero Jazz Festival in Edmonds from March 7-9. This included the Dee Daniels Vocal Jazz Award, the Tenuto – Music Teacher of the Year award, and eight solo awards. The event is the largest vocal jazz festival in the state of Washington with more than 50 schools attending and performing at the festival each year.

One top honor went to senior Leo Castro Sandoval, who sings and plays bass. As the winner of the 2024 Dee Daniels Vocal Jazz Award, Sandoval sang a solo for the mass choir on March 7, received private lessons with jazz professionals, and performed in the main concert on March 8. He also played bass for a duet with New York Voices soprano Kim Nazarian and sang with other professional groups.

The LHS Swingbeat jazz choir participated in the Thursday intensive training, where they had the opportunity to clinic and perform with numerous jazz professionals like Kim Nazarian, Greta Matassa, Free Play and more.

The group came home with an astounding eight solo awards:

  • Jeriah Gibb
  • Claere Cody
  • Leo Sandoval
  • Amelia Koon
  • Isaias Fuentes-Palominos (won 2 awards... one for vocals and one for a soprano sax solo)
  • Evelyn Jodock
  • Jack Williams

The distinguished Tenuto Award was presented to Mrs. Katy Trapp, the high school’s band and choir director of 16 years. “In music, a tenuto mark signifies that a note should be sustained for its whole value. For the past 48 years, recipients of this award are those who have made significant contributions to music education, enabling young people to live their lives to their fullest value.

“Once in a while, there comes along a teacher who embodies such dedication, to her craft and to the students lucky enough to find themselves in her class, that it simply never goes away. Katy Trapp is one such teacher. Choir, jazz choir, band, the DeMiero Jazz Fest board, you name it and she wades in neck-deep, even at the expense of her own free time. Katy truly lives the word tenuto, every day.”
